This is a photo documentary exhibition featuring the "Bright Campaign" which took place in Luquan Yi and Miao AutonomousCounty, Yunnan, China. The Bright Campaign is organized by Gracious Glory Buddhism Foundation since 2007, with the purpose of offering free cataracts surgeries to the people in need. All photos in the exhibition were taken by Pazo Ho, mastermind behind Visual Culture Optical, as a volunteer of the campaign.
Most of Luquan's residents suffer from cataract after turning 30 years old due to the serious sun exposure in high-altitude environment and poor living condition. Up to 2006, there are 348,700 cataract patients in Yunnan, which accounts for 63.74% of the total local visual challenged. Moreover, the numbers of new patients are growing rapidly by about 20,000 cases per year.
In May 2014, led by Gracious Glory Buddhism Foundation, along withVisual Culture Optical and local Yunnan volunteer medical team, the Bright Campaign conducted free cataract surgeries for 275 residents in Luquan and also provided them with ophthalmic examination and vision care program.
As many studies have shown that proper UV protection in the form of sunglasses is one of the easiest ways to slow the progression of cataracts. However, low income family in Luquan averages barely 2,000RMB income per annum and cannot afford proper sunglasses. Therefore, spare sunglasses are called for donation during the exhibition for Luquan residents. The collected sunglasses will betested by Visual Culture Optical to ensure the sun-lenses offer properUV protection. Gracious Glory Buddhism Foundation will deliver all the donated sunglasses to Luquan for the people in need.
